The Healing Begins
Indigo arrived back in Scotland late the next evening. Feeling battered and worn she glanced at her watch. It was ten oâclock. During the past week, sheâd utilised every waking minute and now after a nine-hour drive from Canterbury to North Berwick she felt completely exhausted. Wallace Cuthbert came out to greet her. Indigo took one look at his friendly welcoming face and felt like bursting into tears. He noticed her bruised face but said nothing. She decided to unpack the camper van the following day, and after a brief cup of tea headed upstairs to her room. Climbing into the clean crisp bed sheets, she pulled up the duvet, and closed her eyes.
âLet the healing begin,â she muttered. She felt safe. The bed was extremely soft and comfortable and Indigo slept deeply throughout the night. She awoke early, about eight a.m., with the sun streaming in through a crack in the red curtains. Padding across the thick cream carpet, she opened the French windows. A blast of sea air entered the room. The silence of the house was filled with the sound of seagulls squawking shrilly overhead and the waves battering against the cliffs in the distance. The view of the bay was perfect, like a seascape. The deep blue North Sea stretched out endlessly touching the horizon, volcanic islands adding mystery to the scene. Fields filled with wild flowers of orange, blue and purple lay to her right. North Berwick, and the far away hills of Fife across the water, were to her left. The sky was a light blue with a smattering of clouds.
Throwing on her white dressing gown, Indigo tiptoed down the marble stairs feeling the cold stone under her bare feet. There was no-one about and Wallaceâs car was absent from the gravel parking area outside. Heâd mentioned to her that he was hardly ever at home as he was an active member of the local bowling club and sat on various committees. Filling her flask with tea, she returned to her room. There was a soft wooden garden bench out on the balcony and she sat out there. It was a cool morning and she wrapped herself in a blanket. Sipping her tea, she reflected on what she had achieved in just a week. It was amazing what could be done when the focus was there. It had helped that the angels seemed to have ensured that her transition from her old life in England to her new one in Scotland went smoothly. She couldnât have done any of it without Charlotte. She must remember to send her some flowers. She refused to think about the altercation with Mike the previous day. He would not be allowed to pollute her present.
Firing up her laptop, she clicked onto the Internet. Thankfully, Wallaceâs son seemed to be up to date with everything from shiny new bathrooms and modern kitchens to wireless broad-band. Heâd made sure that his father had everything he needed, whether he wanted it or not.
